Job Description and Duties

The Department of State Hospitals-Napa currently has an opening for a Chief Dentist. The Chief Dentist participates directly in providing admission and annual oral diagnosis, emergency Dental treatment, radiographic evaluation, and referrals to Dental specialists (when deemed necessary and in the patient’s best interest). They provide dental prophylaxis and root planning (in absence of a Dental Hygienist or as needed), restoration of teeth, oral surgery, and endodontics (if patient load permits). They also provide prosthodontic treatment on a case-by-case basis, as patient load allows or medical necessity dictates. The Chief Dentist informs patient of the proposed dental treatment and obtains the patient’s consent before performing the proposed dental treatment. They work directly with the patient, Medical/Nursing staff and Ward Physicians to include instruction of patient and staff (so that they may, in turn, instruct patient) in proper methods of good oral hygiene and plaque control. The Chief Dentist administers the dental program including, but not limited to, coordinating the transfer and scheduling of patient, and planning and implementing dental department goals and activities. The Chief Dentist establishes dental department policy and structure to achieve desired results. They coordinate and arrange outside services, if required and allocate resources within dental services and performs problem solving to ensure effective service and achievement of department goals. The Chief Dentist oversees and coordinates the delivery of treatment, including conformation to laws, regulations, policies, and state licensing and Joint Commission standards. They review outside dental laboratory services to assure quality and arrange for the repair and maintenance of dental equipment. The Chief Dentist promotes effective interdisciplinary teamwork and conducts periodic staff meetings to resolve problems and disseminate information. They develop effective lines of communication and promotes positive staff morale while providing training and technical supervision to the Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and Dental Assistants.
