The Division of Acute Care Surgery (ACS) in the Department of Surgery at the University of New Mexico is recruiting an Acute Care Surgeon. The University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) is the primary affiliate of the UNM School of Medicine and the state’s only verified Level 1 Trauma center. The UNMH serves as the major referral center for tertiary and quaternary care in New Mexico serving a population of 2.1 million people. UNMH has extensive experience and expertise in managing complex surgical patients and critically injured trauma patient. UNMH has 629 beds for adult, pediatric and psychiatric care with over 100,000 ED visits and 3500 trauma admissions (2,000 at the highest activation level, with >20% penetrating trauma) annually. This position is being recruited at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
The UNM Division of Acute Care Surgery consists of 10 Acute Care surgeons covering all facets of Acute Care Surgery: Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. We have a Surgical Critical Care fellowship with expertise in ECMO and ultrasound as well as an AAST certified Acute Care Surgery fellowship with two fellows each year. Our program maintains a high operative volume, with surgeons performing over 300 cases annually. The ACS Division typically manages its own vascular and thoracic cases, supported by robust subspecialty collaboration across all disciplines.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Medical doctor who is board certified/eligible in Surgical Critical Care and General Surgery
- Eligible for licensure in New Mexico
- Eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care
- Appropriate experience in the care of trauma, critical care, and emergency general surgical patients
- Interest in Burn Surgery or possession of a Burn Surgery certificate is considered a plus
- Interest in clinical or outcomes research is welcome
- A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university’s mission to serve local and global communities
